"Steampunk is a literary and artistic movement that melds elements of Victorian-era history with modern technology and fantastical fiction."

Another great year of people, costumes and positive energy.

This is our second year attending the Steampunk: Watch City Festival and the level of design and creative style from individuals and even families, is truly amazing. This is any photographers dream from the bright colors to totally out of this world fashion designs. It still amazes me to see entire families members well dressed in victorian clothing from 8 to 60 years old.

If you have not been out to one of the many events that happen throughout the year, this is one you need to mark your calendars for next year. Nice people, vendors with unique clothing, jewelry and interesting clothing just to name a few of the things happening both days.

Street Photography

In my camera bag for this event:

  • Nikon D90
  • NIkon 35mm 1.8
  • Sigma 70-200 2.8

Morning provided some nice fill light for most of the photos, allowing for some long shadows. At events like this, people love having their photograph taken as long as you go about it the right way. Letting people know a little about yourself and how the photos will/could be used is always helpful. Once you have there permission, give them simple and clear directions. People want to look good in photos and they are relying on you (the photographer) to help reach that goal. Try to place your subject with as few background distractions as possible . If thats not possible, then a shallow depth of field with help create some "creamy" backgrounds (see photo first photo below). Even if your subject is willing, be respective of his/her time. Take a few shots, being sure to get the shot you are looking for and "Thank" them for their time. Who knows, a 5 minute interaction could turn into a new friend and client.
